Environment-Focused School stems from Ho-Chunk
2009-02-09

An idea originated by the Ho-Chunk Nation several years ago will soon lead to new opportunities for Wisconsin high school students.

The Black River Area Green School, also known as BRAGS, is a new charter school focused on the environment.

Tom Chambers, the principal said, "The idea originally came from the Ho-Chunk Nation. They had come to the Black river district and were interested in a charter school that would have specific aspects of nature, Native American culture and land ethic."

The charter school will begin this fall. Any student in Wisconsin is eligible to attend BRAGS through open enrollment. The enrollment period runs Feb. 2 through Feb. 20th.

Students do not need to live in the School District of Black River Falls.

Chambers added, "Even if a student is not 100 percent sure they want to attend, they should file to open enroll. There is no commitment and they can change their mind."

The school plans to enroll between 20 and 25 students initially. The students will be 11th and 12th graders.
