The Ho-Chunk Nation is partnering with other Native American tribes around the state to bring attention to cancer. Louise Voss, Ho-Chunk Health Education Director, says it was the Nation's idea to start the Share the Care Conference several years ago.
"What Share the Care means is it's not just one tribe working by itself," said Voss. "Share the Care means we're trying to get all 11 tribes in the state to work together to combat these issues."
The Share the Care Conference is May 6th and 7th in Lac du Flambeau and is open to everyone who wants more information about cancer issues.
One of the focuses at the conference is on commercial tobacco use and how it increases the likelihood of getting cancer. Presentations will also center around ways to reduce tobacco use.
Voss added, "It's focusing on community members and we're really trying to inform them and educate them about the cancer issues that are affecting Native American people."
Registration is free for tribal members. Please contact Louise Voss at Louise.Voss@ho-chunk.com for information about potential free lodging for the conference.
